On November 16, 2013, I participated in a workshop organized by artist Sue Johnson for her project, Quaking Aspen. The workshop was held at Hollins University, which was showing Johnson’s exhibit, Sue Johnson: American Dreamscape, at the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum.
Quaking Aspen is a project whose cause is to "...collect and save cultural materials by repurposing them as new archival work." This workshop created Volume 3 of the project, and the theme was "The American Dream." Participants were asked to submit representative examples of the "American Dream" from their own lives or interpretations thereof. Pieces, or "specimens," could include ephemera, photographs, written texts, or artwork. Each specimen was then placed into an archival folder and catalogued with information about the participant and the specimen itself. All of the participants’ specimens were then collated into twenty-five archival boxes. The workshop participants then received one box for their own collection, and the remaining boxes will be given to prominent institutions.

For this workshop, I made twenty-five collages using pages from two books I purchased that were deaccessioned by a local library: Workjobs: Activity-centered Learning for Early Childhood Education, by Mary Baratta-Lorton, and Van Nostrand Reinhold Manual of Television Graphics, by Ron Hurrell.
